A layer of mud film is formed on the surface of soil mass  in excavation face, and the mud film thickness increases  with the increasing penetration time, thus effectively  enhancing the penetration resistance.
Support and stabilize the soil mass in excavation face.
During shield tunneling, the slurry balance effect is  achieved by virtue of slurry pressure and frontal soil  pressure, thus effectively support the frontal soil mass.
Cool and lubricate cutterhead, tools and other cutting equipment.

As a result of the wealth of experience accumulated over the following decades, the challenge being faced today is cutting trenches into extremely hard rock and achieving ever-increasing depths. Through project-specific adaptations of the Cutting Wheels, high excavation outputs can frequently be achieved. The open trench which is stabilized and supported by a thixotropic slurry is excavated in a continuous operation.
